Territorio treats the border not as political fact but as a material condition.. something constructed, contested, and nonetheless permeable.
A colorfield, the work is organized through the structural logic of Andean weaving: horizontal strata of pigment that recall simultaneously geological sediment and the warp-and-weft of textile tradition. Cochineal red dominates — a pigment with pre-Columbian roots, made from an insect once traded as currency across empires, later colonized and commodified. Here the color functions as material memory.
Running vertically through the composition, gold leaf cuts across every horizontal band.. a migration path, river system, trade route, and scar simultaneously. The pull between continuity and rupture that defines any living border culture, and one I know firsthand from my experience as a transnational is what I’ve leaned into.
Territorio speaks directly to how communities hold together across lines drawn on maps.
